🌏 Regular Residence and Irregular Residence — Everyone’s Regular, Right? 😉

📅 Written on Saturday, October 25, 2025

Hello 👋
I’m Hiroshi Kawana, an Administrative Scrivener 🙇‍♂️

Normally, I’d start with a seasonal topic 🍁,
but this year, winter seems to have arrived without waiting for autumn ❄️

Just a short while ago we were using air conditioners 💨,
and now, heaters have become essential 🔥

Given how intense the summer was,
perhaps many people even welcome the cold this time 😅

🎓 “Regular” vs “Irregular” Residence — Through the Lens of the ‘One Residence, One Status’ Principle

💡 Foreign nationals residing in Japan are broadly divided into two categories,
based on the “One Residence, One Status of Residence” principle:

🟩 Regular Residence
🟥 Irregular Residence

🟩 Main Procedures for Regular Residence
📄 Extension of Period of Stay
🔄 Change of Status of Residence
🏠 Permission for Permanent Residence
💼 Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted
🪪 Certificate of Authorized Employment

🟥 Main Procedure for Irregular Residence
⚖️ The most typical one is Deportation Proceedings

💬 A Note on “Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted”

Within the scope of regular residence,
this permission holds a somewhat special position 🪄

For example—
👪 Someone staying in Japan under a Dependent (Family Stay) visa,
who wishes to take a part-time job 🧋,
needs to obtain this “Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted.”

Recently, one of our clients successfully received this permission 🎉

However, their workplace requested,
“Please bring the passport with the immigration stamp.” ✋

But—🖥️ in online applications,
the passport is not physically submitted,
so no stamp is placed on it.
This will become increasingly common going forward.

✅ Instead, a stamp is always placed on the back of the residence card,
💬 and an additional sheet called the Permission Certificate is also issued.

👉 Either of these documents can serve as proof,
so please work with confidence ✨

That’s all for today 😊
Please keep yourself warm and take good care not to catch a cold ☕❄️
