Hello 👋
I’m Hiroshi Kawana, a certified administrative scrivener (Gyoseishoshi) 🙇♂️
Tomorrow’s weather will feel like December ❄️, so it might be time to bring out your coat 🧥!
These days, Japan’s seasons seem to be changing — long summers, barely any autumn 🍂, and suddenly winter ⛄️.
If global warming 🌍 is truly caused by human activity, then each of us must do what we can 🌱.
📘 What does “One Residence, One Status of Residence” mean?
This is one of the most fundamental principles of Japan’s Immigration Law 🏛️.
It means that a foreign national can stay in Japan based on only one status of residence at a time.
💡 For example…
You cannot hold both “Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services” 💻 and “Skilled Labor” 🍳 at the same time.
If someone with “Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services” status wants to work in a cooking job,
they must apply to change their status of residence to “Skilled Labor” 🔄.
👨👩👧👦 A more familiar example…
Let’s say a person is staying in Japan under “Dependent” status 👪.
If they wish to use their university experience to work at a company 💼,
they must apply for a Change of Status of Residence to “Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services.”
Once the change is approved,
they lose their “Dependent” status and instead gain the new status of “Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services” 📄.
🚫 You cannot hold multiple statuses!
To repeat — it’s not possible to have more than one status of residence ✖️.
Conversely, if a person has no valid status of residence,
they are considered to be staying illegally 🚨 and may be subject to deportation.
🧭 In conclusion
This principle rarely causes problems in daily practice,
but the entire immigration system is designed based on it.
That’s why understanding the principle of
“One Residence, One Status of Residence”
is important for both administrative scriveners and foreign residents in Japan ✨.
