Hello 👋
This is Hiroshi Kawana, Certified Administrative Scrivener 🙇♂️
📅 Today is Tuesday, October 14, 2025.
For the first time in a while, I actually felt “cold” 🥶!
The human body can’t handle too much heat 🌞 or too much cold ❄️…
We truly are spoiled creatures, aren’t we? 🤣
🔄 Today’s theme: Status of Residence!!
This term has appeared many times already,
but what exactly is a “status of residence”? 👇
✅ What is a status of residence?
It is the legal basis 📄 that allows a foreign national to stay in Japan.
🇯🇵 In order to stay in Japan,
👉 a foreign national must fall under one of the designated statuses of residence.
🆚 How is it different from a “VISA”?
In fact… a visa and a status of residence are NOT the same! 😲
✈️ VISA
→ Required to enter Japan
→ Under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
🏠 Status of Residence
→ Required to remain in Japan after entering
→ Under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice
🙄 However, in practice…
Explaining this difference every time is a hassle,
so many people just call status of residence = VISA 🤣
That’s why,
💡 Knowing “they’re actually different!” makes you sound a bit more like a professional ✨
👥 Who has a status of residence?
Naturally…
All foreigners staying mid- to long-term in Japan have some form of status of residence ✅
🧳 Even if it’s just a “Temporary Visitor (tourist visa),”
👉 it still counts as a proper status of residence!
📈 The number of foreign residents has really increased in recent years!
Do you ever find yourself thinking,
“Does this person also have a status of residence?” 👀
…Maybe that’s just our occupational habit? (lol) 🤣
See you next time! 👋😄
